Blogging is a very common method used make money online. You don’t even have to have your own website to do this. Typically you have to write about something that people want to hear about. Unless of course you are one of those socially interesting people, then you can write about the normal going ons in your life. Either way your articles are going to have to bring in readers or your pay will be minimal. This is because the money you make is generally from ad revenue or affiliate sales. More readers generally equals more impressions/ad clicks/sales, which in turn equals more money.
Where Do I Get A Blog?
Of course you can create your own website, but traffic usually starts out slow and you may not like the return on your investment. If you are just starting out I advise you to try blogging at a free site like Blogger or Tumblr. I personally prefer WordPress, but not necessarily their free service. This blog is hosted on a paid server with the WordPress software. The only thing to remember about free blogging and hosting is that they make the rules, they can remove you’re content or possibly not allow you to make money from ads or affiliate marketing.
Even if you do choose to opt for a free host, I advise you at least pay for a top level domain. An example of a top level domain is dollardojo.com. Having a top level domain gives your website the appearance of being more reputable. We usually have a few good deals that we find going from GoDaddy, I advise you check out our Webmaster Deals. Some of them are for a limited time only so take advantage of them while you can or check back later.
If you want complete control of your website and content then you’re going to need to pay for your own hosting. With your own hosting you control the advertising, the affiliate sales, and any other way you decide to make money. DollarDojo.com is hosted on BlueHost. They have an “Unlimited Everything” plan for less than $5.00 a month that comes with a free domain for the first year. I have been very satisfied with their service thus far. It also comes with 100.00 in free Google AdWords advertising. While I suggest BlueHost, don’t overlook the fact that GoDaddy sells hosting as well, possibly even cheaper. I only recommend BlueHost, because I use their service and am very happy with it.
How Should You Make Money With Your Blog?
This is totally up to you. Most new bloggers think that the only way to make money with your blog is through PPC advertising. This is a very popular and somewhat easy method of making money online. You typically get paid whenever an interested reader clicks on an ad. Simple enough. There’s also affiliate marketing through which you send customers to other websites to buy products and you receive commission payments when they make purchases or complete actions. Alternatively you can sell your own products, but you usually need more than just a blog for this. Also let’s not forget sponsored posts. There are people and companies that will pay you to blog about their company or products. If you are having trouble finding people to do this, try SocialSpark! They specialize in connecting those businesses and people with blogs like yours.
How Much Can I Make?
Some people have been blogging for years and actually pull in thousands a month from the articles they have all over the internet. This is not typical, but definitely possible. Pay per click and pay per mille ads are common earners for most blogs, but affiliate sales are where the big bucks are.
I wrote another article on Squidoo specifically about this. That article only tackles the realistic nature of only using pay per click ads. If you need help with making affiliate sales, check out this article.
To wrap it up…
Let me conclude by saying just about anyone can blog. Don’t be afraid to write. As time passes it usually feels more natural and you get a lot better at it. There’s a lot of money to be made out here in the blogosphere, get your share.
