4 Ways To Increase Organic Search Engine Traffic

It’s no secret that search engine traffic, or “organic” traffic is almost unarguably the most valuable kind of traffic. While referral and direct traffic shouldn’t be frowned at, they usually don’t yield the same results. We’ve already mentioned that organic traffic is primarily search engine traffic. Referral traffic is traffic from other websites that link to pages on your website, hence them “referring” visitors to you. This traffic can also be effective given the right circumstances. Direct traffic is great, but this is usually only acquired after a user has visited your website in the first place. Direct traffic comes when the user directly visits your website by typing in the url or from bookmarks or home pages. With that being said lets look at some of the benefits of organic traffic:

Price. Organic traffic is free. The best things in life usually are.

Targeted. Your customers or visitors are sent to your website for a purpose. Not just “I saw this let me take a look.” They are more likely to buy or click through to other pages.

Validity. If your page ranks on search engines, users are more likely to believe your information or products to be valid or credible.

Now that you know why you should be increasing your organic search engine traffic, let’s look at how to increase your organic search engine traffic. I guess this could just be called good SEO, for the sake of this article we will call these methods to increase organic traffic:

1.) Backlinks Please?

I know this is pretty obvious, but you’re going to need backlinks to your websites. Backlinks are links back to your website ( maybe i should start an online dictionary, I’m sure no one would have guessed that). While these work as great referral links to your website, they also build credibility with search engines. That being said, these can’t just be any links. They should preferably be links from pages that already have high credibility. I would also advise against link schemes. Google has written an entire article about link schemes here.

2.) Long-Tailed Keywords

You’re choice of keywords usually plays the most important role in increasing your traffic. Your keywords are the words you want to appear in search results for. It is usually best to optimize a page for a specific keyword or key phrase. Wouldn’t it be wonderful that you were selling stuffed dog toys and every time someone searches for “stuffed toys” your website popped up on the first page in the results? Of course it would, but the likelihood of that is slim to none. However if they typed in “stuffed dog toys” you have a greater chance of showing up in those results, if you use that as your keyword. The longer the search term, the more narrowed the results are. While the searches for “stuffed toys” might occur much more frequently than “stuffed dog toys,” your result has a better chance of showing if those are your keywords. It’s better to be seen 100 times in 100 searches than 0 times in 1,000,000 searches.

3.) Ping!

What is pinging you might ask? Pinging your website or blog is like telling search engines, “Look over here! New content!” This should be done whenever you update your website with a new post, article, or item to sell. Some blog and website software automatically ping your website for you whenever you post. If yours doesn’t, or you want to be  pinged by more sites here are a few sites that allow you to ping your website:

However, there is such thing as over pinging and this should be avoided. Over pinging can get you flagged as a ping spammer.

4.) Even Google Can’t Find Everything

Yes sometimes even Google needs a map. Sitemaps are very important in getting ranked in search engines. Sitemaps are the primary method by which search engines find and index the different web pages on your site when they crawl it. The alternative is that the search engine looks through your site link by link. This usually results in not all pages being found and priority pages being given less significance. You can visit www.sitemaps.org for more information and how to make your own sitemap.

What Have We Learned?

We’ve learned that Search Engine Optimization is the way to the heart of organic search results. There are so many ways to perfect it and no one system is going to get you to the top. You must utilize all practices available to you to get ahead. There will always be competition, whether or not you win or lose is all in how you play the game.
